Don’t be a willing Captive – Part 1c

See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, and not according to Christ. Colossians 2:8 (LSB).

When someone is in captivity to false prophets and doctrines, for any length of time, their sense of liberation gradually erodes them. When you hear the stories of those who were in captivity to false teachers, doctrines and religious sects, you hear them say, ‘It started gradually, and before they knew it, were deep into whatever it was that the false teachers were parroting. Ernest Hemingway was asked a question, “How did you go bankrupt? Two ways, he said, gradually, then suddenly.” But remember, the Bible says, “So if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.” Read John 8:36 (LSB). Therefore, do not allow yourself to go back into slavery of the mind to falsities.

To avoid being willing captives, the Bible helps us to understand and embrace certain guard rails.

Grow Up and Be on Your Guard: The Bible says, “We are no longer to be children, tossed here and there by waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, by craftiness in deceitful scheming. But speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, that is Christ,” Read Ephesians 4:14-15 (LSB). The Bible says, “You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard lest you, having been carried away by the error of unprincipled men, fall from your own steadfastness, but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory, both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.” Read 2 Peter 3:17-18 (LSB). Watch this, “When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child. When I became a man, I did away with childish things.” Read 1 Corinthians 13:11 (LSB). Beloved, it is time for us to grow up into the things of God and do away with childish behaviours [pause and calmly think].

Stand Firm: The Bible says, “So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us.” In other words, having the conviction to stand on the truths Paul had mentioned in verses 13-14 [Salvation and Sanctification]. Listen to this, “Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” Read 1 Corinthians 15:58 (LSB). Watch this, “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.” Read I Corinthians 16:13 (LSB). As watchmen, we ought to always be spiritually alert to anything that will expose and infiltrate our minds with false doctrines. We must be faithful adherents to the truth of Scripture.

Renew Your Mind: Having the right perspective about life is critically important. In other words, seeing through the eyes of faith. Hence, the Bible says, “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” Read 2 Corinthians 5:7 (LSB). The Bible says, “And be renewed in the spirit of your mind.” Read Ephesians 4:23 (KJV). A mind apart from Christ cannot experience the new spiritual and moral capability to withstand false preachers and doctrines. So then, how do I renew my mind? The Bible says, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Read Romans 12:2 (KJV). Conformity means to ‘assume an outward expression that does not reflect what is really inside, a kind of masquerade or act.’ As Christians, we must be authentic in our profession of faith.

Lastly, as I wrap up on this series, Paul writes, “Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.” Read 1 Corinthians 11:1 (KJV). Beloved, the benchmark for any ministry must of necessity be the Word of God. It should not be about the Pastors or leaders’ charisma and eloquence or presentation, but on the infallible truth of Scripture. One commentator writes, ‘Spiritual leaders must set an example of Christlikeness to follow.’ The Bible says, “But be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” Read 1 Timothy 4:12 (KJV).

Our Father in Heaven, how grateful we are for Your loving kindness and tender mercies. Thank You for the Blood of Christ that was shed on the Cross of Calvary for our sins. It is indeed a sacrifice which we can never repay, and for that we are eternally grateful.

Ne soyez pas un captif volontaire – Partie 1c

Veillez à ce que personne ne vous prenne en captivité par la philosophie et la vaine supercherie, selon la tradition des hommes, selon les principes élémentaires du monde, et non selon le Christ. Colossiens 2:8 (LSB).

Quand quelqu’un est en captivité à cause de faux prophètes et de fausses doctrines, pour une durée quelconque, son sentiment de libération l’érode progressivement. Quand vous entendez les histoires de ceux qui étaient en captivité à cause de faux enseignants, de fausses doctrines et de fausses sectes religieuses, vous les entendez dire: “Cela a commencé progressivement, et avant qu’ils ne s’en rendent compte, ils étaient plongés dans ce que les faux enseignants répétaient comme des perroquets. On a posé la question suivante à Ernest Hemingway: “Comment avez-vous fait faillite? Deux façons, a-t-il dit, progressivement, puis soudainement.” Mais rappelez-vous, la Bible dit: “Si donc le Fils vous rend libres, vous serez vraiment libres.” Lisez Jean 8:36 (LSB). Par conséquent, ne vous permettez pas de retomber dans l’esclavage de l’esprit aux faussetés.

Pour éviter d’être des captifs consentants, la Bible nous aide à comprendre et à adopter certains garde-fous.

Grandissez et soyez sur vos gardes: La Bible dit: “Nous ne devons plus être des enfants, ballottés çà et là par les vagues et emportés par tout vent de doctrine, par la ruse des hommes, par la ruse dans des intrigues trompeuses. Mais en disant la vérité dans l’amour, nous devons grandir dans tous les aspects jusqu’à Celui qui est la tête, c’est-à-dire Christ,” Lisez Éphésiens 4:14-15 (LSB). La Bible dit: “Vous donc, bien-aimés, sachant cela d’avance, prenez garde que, emportés par l’erreur d’hommes sans principes,  vous ne tombiez de votre propre fermeté,  et que vous ne croissiez dans la grâce et la connaissance de notre Seigneur et Sauveur Jésus-Christ. À Lui soit la gloire, maintenant et jusqu’au jour de l’éternité. Amen. Lisez 2 Pierre 3:17-18 (LSB). Regardez ceci: “Quand j’étais enfant, je parlais comme un enfant,  je pensais comme un enfant,  je raisonnais comme un enfant. Quand je suis devenu un homme, j’ai éliminé les choses enfantines. Lisez 1 Corinthiens 13:11 (LSB). Bien-aimés, il est temps pour nous de grandir dans les choses de Dieu et d’en finir avec les comportements enfantins.

Tenez bon La Bible dit: “Ainsi donc, frères, tenez ferme et tenez-vous aux traditions qui vous ont été enseignées, soit de vive voix,  soit par une lettre de notre part.” En d’autres termes, avoir la conviction de s’appuyer sur les vérités que Paul avait mentionnées dans les versets 13-14 [Salut et Sanctification]. Écoutez ceci: “C’est pourquoi, mes frères bien-aimés, soyez fermes, inébranlables, abondant toujours dans l’œuvre du Seigneur, sachant que votre travail n’est pas  vain dans le Seigneur.” Lisez 1 Corinthiens 15:58 (LSB). Regardez ceci: “Soyez vigilants, demeurez fermes dans la foi, agissez comme des hommes, soyez forts.” Lisez I Corinthiens 16:13 (LSB). En tant que sentinelles, nous devons toujours être spirituellement attentifs à tout ce qui exposera et infiltrera notre esprit avec de fausses doctrines. Nous devons être des adhérents fidèles à la vérité de l’Écriture.

Renouvelez votre esprit: Il est extrêmement important d’avoir la bonne perspective sur la vie. En d’autres termes, voir à travers les yeux de la foi. C’est pourquoi la Bible dit: “Car nous marchons par la foi, et non par la vue.” Lisez 2 Corinthiens 5:7 (LSB). La Bible dit: “Et soyez renouvelés dans l’esprit de votre intelligence.” Lisez Éphésiens 4:23 (LSG). Un esprit en dehors du Christ ne peut pas faire l’expérience de la nouvelle capacité spirituelle et morale de résister aux faux prédicateurs et doctrines. Alors, comment puis-je renouveler mon esprit? La Bible dit: “Ne vous conformez pas à ce monde, mais soyez transformés par le renouvellement de votre intelligence.” Lisez Romains 12:2 (LSG). La conformité signifie “assumer une expression extérieure qui ne reflète pas ce qu’il y a vraiment à l’intérieur, une sorte de mascarade ou d’acte.” En tant que chrétiens, nous devons être authentiques dans notre profession de foi.

Enfin, alors que je termine cette série, Paul écrit: “Soyez mes disciples, comme moi aussi je suis de Christ.” Lisez 1 Corinthiens 11:1 (LSG). Bien-aimés, la référence pour tout ministère doit nécessairement être la Parole de Dieu. Il ne doit pas s’agir du charisme, de l’éloquence ou de la présentation des pasteurs ou des dirigeants, mais de la vérité infaillible de l’Écriture. Un commentateur écrit: “Les chefs spirituels doivent donner l’exemple de la ressemblance au Christ.” La Bible dit: “Mais sois un exemple pour les croyants, en paroles, en conversations, en charité, en esprit, en foi, en pureté.” Lisez 1 Timothée 4:12 (LSG).

Notre Père céleste, comme nous sommes reconnaissants de ta bonté aimante et de tes tendres miséricordes. Merci pour le Sang du Christ qui a été versé sur la Croix du Calvaire pour nos péchés. C’est en effet un sacrifice que nous ne pourrons jamais rembourser, et nous en sommes éternellement reconnaissants.
