… One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in His temple. Psalm 27:1-4 (KJV).
The climax of David’s joy and jubilation is to dwell in the house of the Lord – the place of worship dedicated to God Almighty. In other words, David expressed his desire to always be in tune, in sync with the Lord, in every sphere of life.
Digging deeper into the text, David expressed confidence and trust in Yahweh. There are three (3) aspects we can look at to further lay the foundation for Psalm 27:4. Here, we see David using terms like “my light, my salvation, my life.”
- “The Lord is my light: Light is revealing, and God reveals His truth to our human spirit. It gives illumination – showing me the path to walk. The Bible says, “Thou wilt show me the path of life; in Thy presence is fullness of joy; at Thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” Read Psalm 16:11 (KJV). The Bible further says, “Now unto Him that is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,” Read Jude 1:24 (KJV). The Bible says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Read Psalm 119:105 (LSB). In other words beloved, for any meaningful spiritual progress or development to take place, God’s Word and purpose, ought to be the single most important endeavour of one’s life. Let me put it this way, it has to be the binoculars by which you chart the course of your life. The Bible says, “In Thy light, we shall see light.” Read Psalm 69:9 (LSB). In other words, God is the source of ‘life and light.’ Beloved, if you desire God’s plan for your life, then I will encourage you this day to seek His divine guidance so that you will discern accurately what you must do.
- The Lord is my Salvation: Salvation only comes from God. For David, it was deliverance and victory from the guilt and power of sin over his life. God is the only Saviour. The Bible says, “If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Read Romans 10:9 (LSB). David acknowledges faith in Christ for Salvation. The Bible says, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.” Read John 3:16 (LSB). Beloved, Salvation truly comes from God alone. Recall they hymn, “The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge.” Read Psalm 18:2. Beloved, this is absolute faith in God and His Word.
The House of the Lord was not necessarily a physical location or place of worship but had to do with one’s everyday thought life and consciousness about God’s presence. The presence of God is not limited to a physical structure [pause and calmly think]. The Psalmist writes, “If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: if I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there.” Read Psalm 139:8 (KJV). In other words, referring to the Omnipresence of God – whether in a dark place in life, remember the Bible says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.” Read Deuteronomy 31:6.
As we continue to explore our theme text, I am compelled to ask you this question again, what do you desire the most? What do you seek the most while you are on this earth? Do you get satisfaction from earthly or spiritual things? What do you delight in the most? Honestly, pondering and answering these questions will help you locate where you are in your spiritual journey.
When David said, “One thing I have asked from Yahweh, that I shall seek,” what did he mean? He was stirred up by an insatiable appetite for spiritual things, and God’s presence. The Psalmist writes, “For zeal for Your house has consumed me.” Read Psalm 69:9 (LSB). Unfettered desire to commune with the Lord, hence, the statement, “One thing I have desired of the Lord…” Simply put, David’s spiritual hunger consumed him. The Bible says, “Lord, I have loved the habitation of thy house, and the place where thine honour dwelleth.” Read Psalm 26:8 (KJV).
Dear Heavenly Father, You alone are worthy of praise. Your name is exalted above all others. Thank You for Your Faithfulness. Thank You for giving us Your Word, “A lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” Psalm 119:105. I am deeply grateful!
We write. You read. Be encouraged.
