A Living Hope: For Today’s Challenges – Part 1c

Modern life presents pressures that previous generations could scarcely have imagined. We have constant access to news from every corner of the world—wars, violence, disasters, economic uncertainty and human suffering. At the same time, many people are carrying deeply personal burdens: financial pressures, family struggles, health concerns, loneliness, disappointment and a level of mental and emotional exhaustion that can become overwhelming.

For some, the weight of these pressures can become almost unbearable. We may even hear of someone, fully dressed and apparently going about an ordinary day, suddenly stepping in front of an approaching train at a crowded station. While we cannot know everything that is taking place within another person’s mind, such a tragedy can remind us of the devastating depths to which despair and hopelessness can take a person.

The Bible, however, does not ignore the reality of despair. In fact, Scripture gives voice to people who experienced profound emotional and spiritual distress. The Psalmist asks: “Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God.”

Notice that the Psalmist does not deny his distress. He acknowledges it. His soul is “downcast”; he is deeply troubled. Yet, in the middle of that struggle, he deliberately reminds himself where his hope must be placed. Hence, the Bible reminds us, “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in Me.” Read John 14:1.

The apostle Paul similarly describes the pressures of life in 2 Corinthians 4:8–9: “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” What a powerful description of the human experience. There can be pressure without being crushed, confusion without being consumed by despair, and moments when we are struck down without being destroyed. And ultimately, Scripture points us to the source of that hope. Paul writes “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” Read Romans 15:13.

The Bible therefore presents a profound truth: despair may be real, but it does not have to be the end of the story. When circumstances tell us there is no way forward, God offers hope. When our minds are overwhelmed, God offers peace. When we feel alone, God reminds us that we are not abandoned. The Bible says, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Read Hebrews 13:5b. For the believer in Christ, we are never alone. The Scripture further says, “And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do it: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the LORD God, even my God, will be with thee; He will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD.” Read 1 Chronicles 28:20.

The question, then, is not whether life will bring pressure, disappointment or moments of deep discouragement. It will. Let me remind you about what Jesus said, “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” Read John 16:33. Beloved, in this dark world of ours, trouble is certain [pause and calmly think].

The deeper question is, where do we turn when hope seems to disappear? Biblical hope speaks powerfully into each of these realities. Hope reminds us that God remains sovereign when the future appears uncertain. The Bible says, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose” Read Romans 8:28. The Book of Isaiah further strengthens this by saying “Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.” Isaiah 46:9-10.

Hope reminds us that suffering is never meaningless because God works through every circumstance for His purposes – “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.” Read 2 Corinthians 4:17.

Hope reminds us that our identity is found in Christ rather than our achievements or failures – “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” Read 2 Corinthians 5:17.

Hope reminds us that no season of darkness is permanent because God’s promises extend beyond what we can presently see – “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.” Read Psalm 30:5. This is why Christian hope is so different from worldly optimism. Optimism depends on circumstances improving. Hope depends upon God’s unchanging character. Perhaps the most important question is not simply, how difficult is life, but, where am I placing my hope?

It is possible to appear strong on the outside while carrying deep discouragement within. We can continue working, caring for our families, attending Church and fulfilling our responsibilities, while inwardly becoming tired, anxious, lonely or spiritually empty. Sometimes we become so accustomed to carrying our burdens that we forget we were never meant to carry them alone.

Jesus gives us a simple and deeply personal invitation – “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Read Matthew 11:28. This invitation in Matthew 11:28 is unconditional – come as you are. Come with the questions. Come with the fears. Come with the disappointments. Come with the things you cannot explain, or share with anyone.

So perhaps this is a moment to stop and honestly examine our own lives. What has been weighing on you? What have you been carrying alone? Where has discouragement begun to replace hope? Have the pressures of life gradually pushed God to the margins of your life? The Scripture challenges us to bring these burdens to God rather than allowing them to consume us: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” Read 1 Peter 5:7.

There is a profound difference between simply surviving life and surrendering our lives to the One who gives us strength to face it. God does not promise that we will never experience difficulty, but He does promise that we do not have to face it alone. And when we genuinely yield ourselves to Him, we discover that our hope does not have to depend upon our circumstances. Our hope rests in God Himself – “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope.” Read Romans 15:13.

Beloved, before you move on from these words, pause and consider your own life. If you are weary, come to God. If you are discouraged, speak to Him. If you are anxious, give Him your burden. If you have drifted from Him, return to Him. You do not have to have all the answers before you come to God. Even when life feels overwhelming, God is still the God of hope. The Bible says, “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.” Read Hebrews 13:8.

The Psalmist writes, “O give thanks unto the LORD; for He is good: For His mercy endureth forever. O give thanks unto the God of gods: For His mercy endureth forever. O give thanks to the Lord of lords: For His mercy endureth forever…” Read Psalm 136:1-9.
