When you think of the word depth, what comes to your mind? Most recently, I was with my younger brother who is into water production (sachet), and he showed me a photo of a borehole contract he was about to execute, and as he began to explain the process of drilling a borehole, I noticed several layers with different depths, and also realised the deeper you go, the clearer and cleaner the water became free from any debris or contamination. I tell this story because as I was reminiscing my time visiting my brothers water factory, the image of the several depths of the borehole triggered my thoughts to think about the depth of my relationship and fellowship with God’s word. And to further enhance truth, the word DEPTH means “The distance or measure of a thing from the surface to the bottom.”
The oil industry drilling for oil uses heavy drill equipments with different drill bits to breakthrough hard concretes to ultimately reach the purest of oil. Watch this, if you have to cook any type of meat, I believe the process of marination takes place to allow the spices get right deep into the meat, so that by the time you decide to put it in the oven, the spices would have submerged into the meat such that the result is an unbelievable aroma of taste. Let us dig a little bit deeper, exploring for precious stones requires depth; and I don’t believe you can locate precious stones on the surfaces of the earth. It entails digging layers upon layers below the earths crust to locate precious stones. Watch this, if you want to build a magnificent building the foundation has to be very deep to be able to hold up the structure. You know what beloved, anything worth building or constructing requires depth for it to be sustained over a long period of time. Think with me for a minute, plants require their roots to be deep in the soil from where they get their nutrients, and if their roots are not deep enough, it can be easily uprooted.
Quite fascinating as I think about these different scenes, it made me think that the same applies in our interaction with the word of God; the deeper we get into God’s word, the more nutrient we get out of it, and that helps you and I live a balanced and more stable life. Now let us look at a Biblical text to further help us understand the importance of having depth in Gods word. “He is like a man building a house, who dug and went down deep and laid a foundation upon the rock; and when a flood arose, the torrent broke against that house and could not shake or move it, because it had been securely built or founded on a rock.” Read Luke 6:48 (AMP).
Here we see that for your house to be able to withstand the elements of nature, we are told, the foundation must go deep excavating the earth till it reaches a rock; there the foundation is laid. And I hope you can imagine the effort required to dig through an enormous amount of dirt, till you get to the rocky part. The scripture actually calls anyone who does this as being wise.
Subsequent post will help us understand practical steps to help us get deeper and remain in God’s word.
We write. You read. Be encouraged.
Just brilliant Pastor Ricky
