The Word is a lamp – Part 1

iuThis happens to be one of my popular scriptures, and it can be found in Psalm 119:105 which says, “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” Popular because I consciously have to remind myself that I must talk to God first about every and anything before talking to anyone else. Well, what does the text really mean in the context of the Word, the lamp, my feet and my path? And to help us better understand, I want to define some key terms with the view that our eyes will be enlightened even the more, and that we might apply our hearts and minds using the Word of God as a tool to reign and rule in this life.

WORD = TRUTH. In the Greek, the truth is referred to as alétheia[truth, but not merely truth as spoken; truth of idea, reality, sincerity, truth in the moral sphere, divine truth revealed to man, straightforwardness]. The Bible says, “Make them holy by Your truth; teach them Your word, which is truth.” Read John 17:17 (NLT).

Give me Your lantern and compassgive me a mapSo I can find my way to the sacred mountain, to the place of Your presence, To enter the place of worship, meet my exuberant God, Sing my thanks with a harp, magnificent God, my God.” Read Psalm 43:3 (MSG).

LAMP / LIGHT = ILLUMINATION [phōtizō]Referring to enlightenment, spiritually, imbue with saving knowledge. God’s light – His word will show you the way. As the people of God, we are the carriers and distributors of God’s light. The Bible says, “In Him appeared life and this life was the light of mankind.” Read John 1:4 (PHILLIPS).

If you are filled with light, with no dark corners, then your whole life will be radiant, as though a floodlight were filling you with light.” Read Luke 11:36 (NLT). Watch this, “You are the light of the world…” Read Matthew 5:14.

FEET = FOR MOVEMENT AND ACTION. Have you noticed in the book of Jeremiah, one constant theme? “And the word of God came, then Jeremiah went and did what the word said. The word or counsel of God comes with the purpose of instructing us to do something. For we walk by faith [we regulate our lives and conduct ourselves by our conviction or belief respecting man’s relationship to God and divine things, with trust and holy fervour; thus we walk] not by sight or appearance.” Read 2 Corinthians 5:7 (AMPC).

PATH = DIRECTION. Listen to what the Bible says, “But the path of the just (righteous) is like the light of dawn, That shines brighter and brighter until [it reaches its full strength and glory in] the perfect day.” Read Proverbs 4:18 (AMP). Who is the just? You are, I am the just! I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.” Dear beloved, you are not and never at a disadvantage. The problem is not your skin colour, intonation, ethnicity, but one’s ignorance of what God’s word has said.

My Father, thank You. I am eternally grateful that You have chosen to equip us with Your precious treasure – Your WORD. Thank You for the wisdom and comprehension of Your awesome truth.
