Contentment is not in the things you have or don’t have; and I think some Christians are backing up the wrong tree. Why do I say this? Some have the appetite for material things, and no appetite for the things of God. The Bible is clear when it says, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” Read Matthew 6:33 (NLT). Wealth and riches are pursued at the detriment of seeking after the Kingdom of God.

When I think of COVETOUSNESS, I think of it like a mirage – the closer you get, the farther it becomes. Watch this your safety is in the Lord, and not in your wealth or possessions. Yes, wealth is good, but pursuing it at the detriment of your relationship and fellowship with God can be most damaging.  “Then he said, “Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own.” Read Luke 12:14 (NLT), hence Paul wrote in the Bible, “Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.” Read Proverbs 18:14 (TLB). In other words, CONTENTMENT is a way of life, it is a learned behaviour, it is a skill you develop. Selah.

Now, the Bible is clear and tells us what we should COVET. Let us look at what 1 Corinthians 12:31 (NKJV), “But earnestly desire / covet the best gifts: and yet show I unto you a more excellent way.” So what is this best gift? Great question, and I would be excited to show you from the scriptures; “…And now abide faith, hope love, these three; but the greatest of these is LOVE.” Read 1 Corinthians 13:13 (NKJV). So can I submit to you, the more excellent gift or best gift God is showing or telling us about is LOVE. Contentment is a pathway to LOVE, Covetousness is a pathway to Selfishness and Greed. The Bible says, “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what He is saying to the Churches. Read Revelation 2:29 (NLT). This is not a message just for you the reader, but for the entire body of believers.

Listen to my heart on this matter, we should not put our safety in material things, they develop wings and can fly away, but Spiritual things are eternal and they last forever, hence the Bible says, “Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand.” Read Colossians 3:1 (NLT). So you see, our realities are Spiritual and not physical. So pay attention to your human spirit. Here what the Bible says, “The spirit of man will sustain him in infirmity,” In other words, a fortified human spirit propped up and supported by God’s word will pursue and seek after earnestly the best gift.

A lack of CONTENTMENT can lead to lost focus equally having the ability of pulling you away from focusing on exactly what matters in life; seeking after and infusing your human spirit with the substance of the word of God, hence John 6:27 says, “Don’t waste your energy striving for perishable food like that. Work for the food that sticks with you, food that nourishes your lasting life, food the Son of Man provides. He and what he does are guaranteed by God the Father to last.” Beloved, this is not hard, why? Grace has completed the work, and all you have to do is embrace and thank God for the finished work and walk in the liberty of CONTENTMENT in Christ Jesus. Hey, don’t beat yourself up if you are not in a place of CONTENTMENT right now; I encourage you, keep embracing His grace; for in His grace, “all things are yours.” Glory to God.
